As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration proposed new regulations Wednesday that would require manufacturers to include electronic stability control safety systems in these types of vehicles.

As noted in the report, the proposed system would sense a loss of driver control and utilize computer-controlled braking to stabilize vehicles. Safety systems have already been introduced for passenger cars, light trucks, and SUVs.

NHTSA Administrator David Strickland, is quoted by the AP as stating of the proposal, “We've already seen how effective stability control can be at reducing rollovers in passenger vehicles… Now, we're expanding our efforts to require stability enhancing technology on the many large trucks, motor coaches, and other large buses on our roadways.”

The school bus accident occurred on Hamilton Boulevard (Route 222) near the on-ramp to Interstate 78 East, on the border between South Whitehall and Lower Macungie townships, reported Lehighvalleylive.com.

According to reports, ninth-grade students from Pennridge High School in Perkasie, Pa., were returning from a trip to Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom when the accident occurred.

The buses were headed south on Route 222 and were turning left onto the I-78 ramp when the first bus made a turn on a green arrow light. But, by the time the second bus attempted to pass through the light it had already changed to a solid green light, and northbound traffic was beginning to move through the intersection. The second bus tried to make the turn anyway, at the same time as an Impreza was coming through the intersection. The bus driver swerved to avoid a collision, but instead slammed into a traffic light pole and the Impreza hit the front of the bus.

The two other school buses were involved in the wreck.

Responding emergency crews transported fifteen people, including the driver of the Impreza, to area hospitals for treatment of injuries. Eight people were reportedly taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township, and seven others were taken to St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill.

The school bus driver was cited for failure to yield to oncoming traffic while making a left turn. The identity of the bus driver has yet to be released.

Investigations are ongoing.

/// 05/17/2012
05/17/2012 // WPB, FL, USA // Injury Lawyers News // Nicole Howley // (press release)

New York, NY — Button batteries, which are coin-sized batteries used to power dozens of household items, are landing children in the hospital. In fact, button batteries were cited for 84 percent of the battery-related hospital emergency room visits by children from 1999 to 2009, and once they are ingested, they can be life threatening, reports USA Today.

According to a new study reported in the journal Pediatrics, there were 66,000 battery-related emergency department visits by children under 18 during the 20-year-span, and the annual number more than doubled — from 2,591 to 5,525 — by 2009. More than 75% of all battery-related hospital visits involved children 5 or younger.

Researchers found that the increase in emergency room visits aligns with the introduction of the 3-volt 20-millimeter lithium battery, which is “more powerful and can cause tissue damage more quickly,” says Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

While in most cases the batteries are passed in the stool, if it happens to land with its negative pole in contact with tissue fluids in the liming of the esophagus, a microcurrent can generate hydroxide, resulting in alkaline burns and perforations of the esophagus in less than two hours, Smith told USA Today.

As a result of ingesting the batteries, complications can include fatal aorta damage.

"Individual manufacturers have stepped up to make their devices that contain button batteries more resistant to child access," Smith adds. "Parents need to make sure their children cannot get access, by taping battery compartments shut and keeping loose batteries out of children's reach."

The Midland/Odessa, Texas truck crash lawyers at Fadduol, Cluff & Hardy, P.C. represent victims who have suffered injuries because of traffic accidents involving large commercial trucks. These truck crash attorneys stay current on news regarding the trucking industry. They note that the United States Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently issued a press release regarding a shutdown order issued by the agency.

The agency ordered Georgia-based Judson Mobley Logging, Inc. to immediately cease all transportation services because the company was an imminent hazard to public safety. This order was issued following an extensive review of the company’s operations. This review, conducted by FMCSA, found multiple violations of drug and alcohol testing, driver qualifications, and vehicle maintenance rules that substantially increased the likelihood of jeopardizing the safety of others. FMCSA immediately shut down the company’s operations after safety investigators discovered that the company continued to operate its vehicles in violation of a previous agency order to stop transportation services because of an unsatisfactory safety rating.

The FMCSA takes measures to protect the public by aggressively pursuing and shutting down trucking companies that violate safety measures. Even so, trucking companies continue to violate safety rules and regulations. These violations can lead to tragic accidents that result in horrific injuries to people traveling in passenger cars.
